Unlike migraines and cluster headaches, which exert sharp, throbbing pains on one side of the head, a tension headache is a dull, all over ache that lingers long after it has outstayed its welcome. It doesn't come in the blazing flares of pain that other headaches have; rather, it oozes in, a dull ache, and settles down for the long haul. Trying to work or concentrate or focus on anything with a tension headache can be like trying to think with your head in a tight vice. Like a bulldog, once tension headaches get a hold, it can seem almost impossible to get it to let go. The good news is, it's *not* impossible; in fact, headaches can be some of the easiest to diagnose and get rid of.
Headache Jaw Pain
These headaches are caused by stress. Stress causes muscles in your back and neck to tense up, which in turn causes pain in your head (just as pain in your neck is often caused by tension or knotted muscles near the bottoms of your shoulder blades, and not in your neck at all). Because the tension headache is caused by stress, it's easy to treat. Anything that relaxes those muscles in your back and neck will ease a tension headache, whether it be a brisk walk, a warm cup of tea or coffee, lying down for fifteen or twenty minutes, if you have that luxury, soft music, or aromatherapy (sandalwood, lavender, and rosewood oils all work well for easing tension, and grapefruit and peppermint oils invigorate and restore energy.)
If these tension headaches are frequent, and easing stress doesn't seem to ease the headaches, you may consider acupuncture. Some people have had success keeping these headaches at bay using regular acupuncture appointments, although others haven't. As with anything else, getting rid of a headache can sometimes be a matter of trial and error. But usually just easing stress will ease your tension headache.
